Stakeholder Consultation to review the National Laboratory Policy and Medical Laboratories Legislation and Regulations – Antigua

CMLF, with support from the OECS Global Fund, continues to provide “hands on” support and technical guidance to Ministries of Health and medical laboratories in the six independent OECS Member States and has been very actively engaged in providing support to the national laboratory policy, legislation and regulatory initiative.

The Stakeholder Consultation for sensitizing stakeholders and obtaining their input on the national laboratory policy, legislation and regulations took place in Antigua & Barbuda on the 8th and 9th April, 2024. This was the 5th Stakeholder Consultation taking place in the OECS countries on this important legislative initiative.

Minister of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation and the Environment, The Honourable Sir Molwyn Joseph, opened the meeting and later took an active part in the discussions. Also giving introductory presentations were Mrs. Ena Dalso-Henry Permanent Secretary and Chief Medical Officer Ag. Dr. Kamaria DeCastro. Ms. Barbara Joseph, Laboratory Manager at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, chaired the opening session and provided key background information.

There was good representation and full participation from Ministry of Health stakeholders, private laboratories, Ministry of Education and tertiary training, among others. The Chief Parliamentary Counsel of the Attorney General’s Office led discussions on the draft legislation and regulations. All participating stakeholders now have a better understanding of the critical importance of the regulation of medical laboratories and their roles in supporting this important initiative. CMLF facilitators for the consultation were Mrs. Wendy Kitson-Piggott & Ms. Valerie Wilson.
